Heavy metal has undergone significant transformation over the years. Its roots can be traced back to bands like Led Zeppelin and Black Sabbath. The term "heavy metal" was invented by Steppenwolf in their song Born to be Wild, in the line "I like smokin' lightnin'/heavy metal thunder." Originally an offshoot of late-'60s psychedelic rock, heavy metal has become a phenomena all its own. Modern heavy metal draws its style from 3 bands: its unholy themes come from Black Sabbath, its fast-paced musical style from Metallica, and its ear-piercing vocals from Skid Row.
