During the '80s the heavy metal scene was split between two styles: the emerging style of bands such as Metallica, and the vicious glam metal of Def Leppard, Mötley Crüe, and the like.  Also known as pop-metal or hair metal, glam metal was the original continuation of heavy metal from its rock & roll roots.  Influenced by the rock of the New York Dolls and Alice Cooper, Bon Jovi's 1986 album Slippery When Wet heralded the arrival of glam metal.
